It's been 95 years since the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was first introduced in this country, and for 95 years efforts to enact the amendment have been either rejected or ignored. In the last few decades, courts have interpreted the constitution to prohibit most forms of sex-discrimination, and the ERA has been mostly dismissed as unnecessary.  Others press on, committed to finishing what the suffragettes began.

Is the ERA just a relic from a by-gone era, or is it the key missing piece to gender equality?  Would it make any meaningful difference -- and would we like the difference it would make?  Join Sara Collina from Georgetown University’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program to learn about the Supreme Court's approach to sex discrimination in all its forms-- and specifically how the failure of the ERA has shaped a generation of women.

About the Speaker:  Sara Collina is a lecturer in Georgetown University’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program. She is also an attorney, educator, and entrepreneur; she currently runs a small consulting firm that helps advocacy organizations use science and law to meet their strategic goals. Sara's research focuses on how domestic public policy shapes—and is shaped by-- gender, particularly in women’s health and sexual misconduct in educational settings. Sara holds a B.A. from Cornell University and a law degree from Berkeley Law School.

At the Easter Seals building, 1420 Spring St., on Thursday March 29 at 2:00. RSVP via the Village website calendar, by email to programs@silverspringvillage.org, or by phoning the Village at 301-503-7401.
